The Bandh for Citizenship Bill is about providing citizenships to illegal Hindus on religious lines and government is pursuing it for their petty interests. Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) who has organised the protesting rally today and are expecting 50,000 people to participate in this rally, it is a 12 hour protest by 60 anti-NCR groups against the Citizenship Bill, creating blockades on railway tracks and disrupting train services, burning tires on streets. All shops, schools remained close and news of violence has been reported from certain places. The police has been asked to arrest the Bandh supporters and as a result 100’s of the protestants have been detained.
The government has announced an emergency meeting with ministers and BJP leaders to discuss the issue and have asked traders to keep their business running on this day and if they fail to do so their trading license will be cancelled.
Police escorts were provided in public transport to ensure the safe movement of transport services during the protest. 46 organisations have called this Bandh protest against the Centre’s bid to pass the Citizenship Bill, whereas on the other hand some parties like Congress & the AIUDF have shared their support to the Bandh in favour of Assam and its natives.
The Deputy Commissioners of different districts have issued an order for all the government officials to attend their duties and also to the shops, educational institutions, business establishments to remain open and the transport facilities to function normally.
The protestants and the supporting organisations will not call the strike off because the existence of Assamese and their identity is at stake by the Bill.
